The Journey of Embracing My Little Miracle: A Story of Hope and Resilience
The Results Were In
I received a call from Nurse Allison. She explained that the doctor wanted to discuss the results the next day. “You’re having a little boy, Moma!” she said. But then came the news that shook me. “Your genetic testing revealed some concerning details in the Trisomy trait percentile. You scored 96% for T21, which means your baby may not be as perfect as you would like.”
Wait?! Trisomy 21? Did I hear what I thought I heard? “What is that, the Trisomy 21?” I asked. She responded, “Trisomy 21 is the classification for Down Syndrome. It means the baby has an extra copy of chromosome 21 from his mom. He will have no mutations, but may present with cognitive and developmental delays. He may only reach the intellect of a 7th-grade education. How are you doing with this information, Moma?”
My initial reaction was disbelief. “Why are you still talking?” and “I think you read the wrong report.” But I was trying to keep it together. I wanted to believe it wasn’t a complete blow to my heart. Justin had mentioned it, but I felt like she and Justin did not know the details God had placed in this little miracle before placing him in my womb. After 15 years of trying to raise a family, there was no way he was not perfect. He was my little miracle!
Now I know she had to say all those things to set the proper expectations, but the next few sentences were below the belt.
Facing the Unexpected
“Do you think you would want to continue your pregnancy, or are you thinking about terminating it? If you’re not sure, we have genetic counselors who can help you navigate your decision. We can set you up with further testing to confirm the initial test, which is more invasive because it samples the amniotic fluid and is more reliable as it takes from the fetal cells.”
“Oh, yes! This is my little miracle baby boy. I knew I would have a boy. My father had told my mother I’d have two boys. I’m just concerned about the multiple fibroids that are in there with him. Do you think they will cause problems; use his blood supply?”
I suppose I was expected to fall over crying. I showed no fear or alarm at what she had said or how she said it. I felt like I was going to need the expertise of a counselor so I could champion his healthcare. So, I agreed to counseling classes. She reassured me, “Women have babies with fibroids and later get them removed.”
“Well, Moma, I know that wasn’t the news that you wanted to hear. I’ll tell Allison to set you up with our outpatient MFM partners to schedule counseling. I’ll give you a few moments to yourself, and then you can go out the side door.”
A Mother’s Strength
At that moment, I couldn’t believe my ears. What?! I’m not distraught or crying. I was charting a comprehensive game plan! I took what was said and accepted the challenge. I stepped up to the plate and was ready for every curveball. Failure is not an option!
“No ma’am. I will not go out the side door. I am a mother and not afraid of change or a challenge.”
The audacity to depreciate my little miracle baby! Did she just try to shame me?!
Embracing the Journey
This journey is not just about the diagnosis. It’s about embracing every moment, every heartbeat, and every kick. It’s about celebrating the life growing inside me, regardless of the challenges we may face. I refuse to let fear dictate my path. Instead, I choose to walk in faith, surrounded by love and support.
The Power of Community
In this journey, community plays a crucial role. Connecting with other families who have walked this path is invaluable. Sharing experiences, advice, and encouragement creates a powerful support system. We uplift each other, reminding ourselves that we are not alone!
The Role of Advocacy
Advocacy is essential. It empowers us to speak up for our children, ensuring they receive the resources and support they need. We must educate ourselves and others about Down Syndrome. Knowledge is power! Together, we can break down barriers and challenge misconceptions.
Celebrating Every Milestone
Every milestone, big or small, deserves celebration! From the first ultrasound to the first steps, each moment is a testament to our strength and resilience. I am committed to cherishing these experiences and sharing them with my little miracle.
A Future Full of Possibilities
The future is bright! I envision a life filled with laughter, joy, and love. My little boy will teach me lessons I never knew I needed. He will inspire me to be a better person, to advocate fiercely, and to love unconditionally.
In conclusion, this journey is not just about the challenges we face. It’s about the triumphs we achieve together. I am proud to be a mother to my little miracle. Together, we will navigate this path, embracing every twist and turn with courage and grace!
